ingredients as self-tanning lotions, but application is much
easier and the light oil is absorbed more quickly than lotions

just a hint of color gives you a healthy glow. Manufacturers
offer a variety of daily moisturizer for a subtle, natural-looking
glow, as well as bronzing sticks for spot touch-ups
5. Tanning Bed Lotions -- If you really must tan indoors in
a tanning bed, then purchasing the best lotion available is
a good first step to ensuring your protection. Review

Tanning Trends to be aware of:
1. Tanning pills -- Tanning pills contain canthaxanthin, which
is most commonly used as a color additive in certain foods.
After canthaxanthin is consumed, it is deposited throughout
the body, including in the layer of fat below the skin, which
turns an orange-brown color. These types of tanning pills have
been linked to various side effects, including hepatitis and
canthaxanthin retinopathy, a condition in which yellow deposits
form in the retina of the eye. Side effects including damage
to the digestive system and skin surface have also been noted.
The FDA withdrew approval for use of canthaxanthin as a tanning
agent, and has issued warnings concerning its use.
2. Melanotan, a melanocyte stimulating hormone, which induces
skin pigment increase and tanning, is another alternative on
the horizon. This drug has not yet been approved for clinical
trials in the USA, although it has been extensively tested in
Australia. Melanotan may require some UV exposure to be most
effective.
Tips for using self-tanners:
We all know that the sun can have damaging effects, so why
not try a self-tanner for an all-over natural healthy glow.
Here are some tips to follow when using a self-tanning lotion
/ cream
1. Exfoliate the areas of the body where you will apply the
self-tanning lotion. This will remove the dead skin.
2. Moisturize your skin thoroughly, as dry skin will encourage
the lotion to streak
3. We suggest wearing latex gloves when applying your self-tanning
lotion.
If you do get any lotion under your nails wash your hands immediately
4. Test a small amount of the self-tanning lotion on an inconspicuous
part of your body. Your skin may react to a certain self-tanner,
so this is an important step to take
5. Apply the self-tanner to your body in thin layers and smooth
strokes.
6. Apply liberally to your knees and elbows as these areas
of your body tend to absorb lotions a little more
7. Don't forget your back -- have a friend help you
8. Wait at least 15 minutes before getting dressed to allow
the lotion to dry.
9. We suggest that you reapply the self-tanning lotion every
3-5 days to keep you tan looking rich and healthy
Additional comments from our Editor:
1. According to the American
Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available
are sunless tanning or self tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone
(DHA) as the active ingredient
2. Tanning accelerators (lotions or pills) that usually contain
the amino acid tyrosine claim that they stimulate and increase
melanin formation, which accelerates the tanning process.
